In May, Rio de Janeiro will host Festival 3i, in a face-to-face format and in a more streamlined version, in which the focus is on the themes of entrepreneurship, the sustainability of journalism, and innovation. “We want to bring successful cases of journalistic products that are being made in the country and the relationship with technology. Therefore, we are bringing up the discussion of both the regulation of platforms [digitais]the relationship that journalism has with big techs [grandes empresas de tecnologia], as well as the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the impact it can have on journalism and public debate as well”, said the executive director of the Digital Journalism Association (Ajor), Maia Fortes. Considered one of the main journalism and entrepreneurship events in Latin America, Festival 3i will have its fourth national edition between May 5th and 7th, at Casa da Glória, in Rio de Janeiro. The organizers of the event want to bring the motto of Festival 3i, formed by innovation, independence and inspiration, to journalism in Brazil and in the world. During the covid-19 pandemic, the festival had online editions. At the beginning of last year, there was a free and extended edition, involving ten days of events, with three debate tables each day. “It was an initial milestone for the construction of the new edition which, from now on, will be organized by Ajor”, said Maia Fortes. “The idea was to be able to list themes that we understood were relevant at that time, for journalism”. Registration The festival brings together more than 40 professionals from Latin America and the world to participate in debates. Tickets for Festival 3i are on sale through Sympla. The passport for the three days of the event costs BRL 250 for the full ticket and BRL 125 for the half ticket. If you want to purchase a ticket per day, the price is R$ 150 (full ticket) and R$ 75 (half ticket). Participants will receive a certificate. Registration for the workshops is now open and can be done on the festival page. The general director of the Gabo Foundation, Jaime Abello, is the festival’s guest of honor and will give a lecture on the first day of the event. The Gabo Foundation was founded by writer Gabriel García Márquez with the mission of promoting better journalism and stimulating creativity, with an emphasis on the method of seminars and workshops. “We understand that the foundation itself fulfills the role of disseminating this concept, this conception, throughout Latin America, for a long time, and it has been a reference in the production of knowledge, whether research or workshops related to digital journalism, they are always ahead of that perspective,” said Maia. Regulation In the discussion of the regulation of digital platforms, representatives from Canada and Europe will come, which are currently debating the subject, as well as Brazil. The panel includes Canadian Taylor Owen, founding director of the Center for Media, Technology and Democracy at McGill University; the Danish Iacob Gammeltoft, Policy Manager at NewsMedia Europe; Francisco Brito Cruz, executive director of InternetLab; and Federal Deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB/SP), rapporteur for Bill No. 2630/2020, the Bill of Fake News, which establishes rules for social networks and messaging applications in order to promote more transparency, fight fake news and create mechanisms for remuneration of journalism. The impacts of artificial intelligence on journalism and public debate will be the subject of debate at Festival 3i, bringing together names such as Jonathan Stray, from the Center for Human Compatible AI, at the University of California, Berkeley, United States; Florencia Coelho, co-founder of the La Nación Data team in Argentina; and South African Tshepo Tshabalala, manager of Journalism AI, a research and training project at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Periferia Maia Fortes also informed that Festival 3i will have a panel focused on peripheral journalism. “It is important to discuss the role played by these organizations that are in the territory and, many times, end up being a reference for the larger vehicles to produce guidelines related to these territories”, she said. A more transversal part of the event’s program aims to look at how journalism entrepreneurs manage to structure themselves and create organizations that have more institutional security. “We’re going to have tables debating new sources of funding, relationship with the audience, because we understand that the public is at the center of journalism. We will have another table on the possible creation of journalistic funds in Brazil and in the world, ”she said. At these tables, the participation of Atila Iamarino, biologist and scientific popularizer; Branca Vianna, founder and producer of Rádio Novello; journalist and columnist Tiago Rogero, winner of the 2020 Vladimir Herzog Award for the Querino project, a podcast with an Afro-centered look at the history of Brazil; the Mexican Alejandra Higareda, founder of Malvestida magazine, which works with women’s themes in a modern and inclusive way; and actress and journalist Ademara Barros. The 3i Festival is organized by the Digital Journalism Association (Ajor). This edition is sponsored by Google, Meta, Luminate, TikTok, Tide Setubal Foundation and Clua (Climate and Land Use Alliance); support from Ford Foundation and Oak Foundation; and production of Cardápio de Ideias Comunicação e Eventos.
