The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) announced this Thursday (4) the start of activities for the Fifth National Communication, Biennial Update Report and Biennial Transparency Reports for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC ). The activities will be developed in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). According to the minister of the portfolio, Luciana Santos, the main expected results are the technical-scientific improvement on climate change and the dissemination of information and analyzes on the impacts of climate change. “In addition to being the search for these variables itself, it is a true scientific study, insofar as, in global warming, we have to measure all the time what kind of activities – be they economic, agriculture or urban use – identification of the phenomena of global warming and with that we manage to assemble a diagnosis that makes it possible to obtain a planning tool for all instances of government, civil society and private initiative”, he explained. Partnership The international cooperation project involves financing in the amount of US$ 7.5 million. These resources come from the Global Environment Fund, a financial entity of the Climate Convention. The value is destined for the production of studies that subsidize the reports described in the name of the project. The information generated and consolidated through these documents is used to support decision-making based on scientific evidence. “It is a decisive tool that joins scientific knowledge and planning parameters for effective actions in the face of global warming”, said the minister. Reports According to the ministry, the agreement will allow Brazil to present in 2024 the first Biennial Transparency Report according to the rules of the Paris Agreement. The document will report to the international community, among other aspects, the progress of implementation and achievement of the targets assumed by the country to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the agreement.
