Paralympic cycling: Chaman wins bronze, the 2nd in the country in Belgium

05/05/2023
in English

Paralympic medalist Lauro Chaman won Brazil’s second bronze in the Belgian stage of the World Cup, in the city of Ostend and, to boot, took the lead in the world ranking, getting closer to the vacancy for the Paris 2024 Games. The 36-year-old completed the time trial (31.5 km course) in 38min21s762. Charman competes in the MC5 class (athletes with physical impairments or amputees). The winner of the race was the Frenchman Dorlan Foulon (38min09s395) and the silver went to the athlete from the Netherlands Daniel Abraham Gebru (38min19s172). On Thursday (4), Gilmara do Rósario (WH2 class) was the first athlete from the country to climb to the podium in Ostend. Brazilian Lauro Chaman (on the far right) celebrates winning bronze alongside Frenchman Dorlan Foulon and athlete Daniel Abraham Gebru (Netherlands) – JB Benavent/CBC/Rights Reserved The Brazilian already has a Paralympic silver and bronze in his career , conquered in Rio 2016. This Saturday (7), Chaman will compete in the resistance test in Ostend, with real chances of moving even further at the top of the ranking, if he completes the test in the top three. He leads the list with 157 points, 37 ahead of second place, Algerian Zenedine Merabet. Frenchman Kevin Le Cunff ranks third with 112 points. Lauro Chaman has been collecting podiums this season. He won gold in the time trial and silver in the endurance event at the Italian leg of the World Cup in Maniago. Last Saturday (29) , the Brazilian was champion of the 80 km endurance race in Ronde in Vlaanderen (Belgium). Towards the 2024 Paris Games Brazil is already guaranteed two spots (one male and one female) at the Paris Games, defined by the International Cycling Union (UCI), at the conclusion of the 2022 ranking of nations. But the country’s presence can be expanded with the second allocation of vacancies: that of the Paralympic world ranking, whose points began to be added this year with the three stages of the World Cup. The count will also include the Glasgow Track and Road Paracycling World Championship (August 5-13 this year) and the 2024 Track World Championship in Rio de Janeiro. The stages of the World Cup are the most valuable in totaling the world ranking – 60 points for the winners -, second only to the World Cup (120 points).
