The body of former councilor David Miranda, who died this Tuesday morning (9), will be laid to rest in the hall of the Pedro Ernesto Palace, seat of the municipal Legislative Power. The wake will take place this Wednesday (10), from 2 pm to 5 pm, and the ceremony will be open to the public. Access for the press will be through the side entrance of the Palace, without the need for prior registration. Miranda had been hospitalized for nine months in an intensive care unit and, according to her husband, journalist Glenn Greenwald, “died peacefully, surrounded by our children, family and friends”. The former parliamentarian was hospitalized in August 2022 due to inflammation and infection in the abdominal area. David Michel dos Santos Miranda was born on May 10, 1985, in Favela do Jacarezinho, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. His political trajectory began in 2016, when he was elected by the PSOL as the first LGBTQIA+ declared councilor in the history of the City Council, prioritizing the presentation of projects in defense of the rights of this community. As a councilor, he was the author of the law that guaranteed the use of social names by transvestites and transsexuals within the scope of the municipal administration and the law that determines the dissemination of the Disque 100 against racism, among more than ten norms of which he was the author or co-author . In 2019, he took over as a federal deputy after Jean Wyllys left the country after receiving death threats. The politician, who would have turned 38, leaves her husband, the American journalist Glenn Greenwald, and three children: João, Jonathas and Marcelo. Regret In a note, the City Council of Rio regretted the death of the former councilor and former federal deputy. “When he held a chair in the House, between 2017 and 2019, David stood out in the fight for human rights and equality. The Chamber is in solidarity with the family, friends and all those who had the privilege of living and working alongside David Miranda”.
