Brazil condemns Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip

10/05/2023
in English

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement this Wednesday (10th) to condemn the bombings carried out at dawn today by the Israeli Air Force on residential areas in the Gaza Strip, in the State of Palestine. The attacks caused the death of at least 13 Palestinian citizens, including ten civilians, including children. “The Brazilian Government expresses condolences to the families of the victims and expresses its solidarity with the people and government of the State of Palestine. Brazil regrets that in 2023, the year of the 30th anniversary of the Oslo Peace Accords, the deaths of more than of 100 Palestinians and more than 15 Israelis in conflict. By reiterating that there is no justification for resorting to violence, especially against civilians, the Brazilian government appeals to the parties to refrain from actions that lead to an escalation of tension”, says the note . Brazil reiterates its commitment to international law, international humanitarian law and the two-state solution, so that Palestine and Israel can live together in peace and security, within mutually agreed and internationally recognized borders. It also reaffirms that the mere management of the conflict does not constitute a viable alternative for dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and that the resumption of peace negotiations is urgent. Strikes Israeli military forces hit Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip for a second day on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Palestinian militants in the region began launching rockets across the border, setting off sirens and sending residents into shelters far from Tel Aviv. The military said it was trying to hit targets preemptively, with explosions at different points, including what witnesses described as a training camp in the northern part of the Gaza Strip and an open area in the south. At least one man was killed and one wounded, medical officials said. Identities were not revealed. Minutes after the attacks, sirens sounded across Israel – initially among border communities, but soon also in and around the commercial capital Tel Aviv, 60 kilometers north of Gaza. There are no reports of casualties in Israel, although local media reported that a house was hit in the town of Sderot. In Gaza, several contrails could be seen as the rockets were launched. Explosions in the air signaled intercepts by Israel’s Iron Dome air defense system. On Tuesday, Israel launched a series of attacks that it said targeted Islamic Jihad leaders responsible for planning attacks. At least ten civilians were killed in the attacks, as well as three senior commanders.
