Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), ordered Telegram to delete the message sent on Tuesday (9) to platform users against the approval of the bill to combat the dissemination of fake news, in which it says which represents “an attack on democracy”. Moraes also determined that the platform should send a new message to users stating that the publication constitutes “flagrant and illicit misinformation” for having stated that the eventual approval of the bill can be understood as censorship. The minister also ordered Telegram’s legal representatives in the country to testify to the Federal Police within 48 hours. According to the order, Telegram will be offline for 72 hours in case of non-compliance with the decision clauses. In the mass message released on Tuesday, Telegram Brasil says that the Fake News Bill represents “an attack on democracy”. According to the platform, the PL “grant censorship powers” to the federal government and create a permanent surveillance system that “will kill the modern internet”, if approved by the National Congress. Telegram still threatens that, if the PL passes with the current wording, “companies like Telegram may have to stop providing services in Brazil”.
