This Thursday (11th) federal police are carrying out a search and seizure warrant at the Angra 1 nuclear power plant, located in the Angra dos Reis complex, on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro. According to the Federal Police (PF), the diligence is related to two police investigations that investigate leaks of water contaminated with radioactive waste in Ilha Grande Bay. The PF investigates whether there was an omission on the part of the plant’s management in communicating the disposal of radioactive material to the competent authorities. The police are also investigating possible environmental crimes. The leak occurred in September 2022. According to the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), Eletronuclear, the state-owned company that manages the plant, only recognized the incident after four months. Before that, according to Ibama, the company denied having carried out the eviction. For this reason, Ibama decided to fine Eletronuclear R$ 2.1 million. The company that manages the plant reported that only 90 liters of water containing substances of “low radioactive content” were dumped and that, as the values were below the limits of the legislation, it treated the incident as an “internal operational event”. At the time of the assessment, the company also informed that it also monitored the location where the leak occurred and that it found only two elements with a low radiological activity, that is, with radiation levels below that received by a person during an X-ray examination. X. Agência Brasil contacted Eletronuclear’s press office about the PF action and is awaiting a position.
