Operation at Karipuna TI results in 12 indictments and one arrest

Operation to remove invaders from the Karipuna Indigenous Land, in Rondônia, accounts for one person arrested, 12 loggers indicted and 14 companies fined, on the first day of joint action by the Federal Police, the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and the National Indian Foundation (Funai). The operation began this Thursday (11), mobilizing 80 federal police officers and 11 professionals from other institutions. The objective was to identify “people involved in the subdivision activities and illegal commercialization of land [grilagem] and in illegal logging in the interior,” reported the PF. So far, 7,400 m³ of wood have been seized, material worth approximately R$1.2 million. According to the PF, federal criminal experts collected samples in the yards of the companies, having found possible inconsistencies between the species of wood and the declarations to the Official System of Control of Forest Products (Sisdof). The actions initiated yesterday have already resulted in the imposition of R$ 1.51 million in fines by Ibama. The PF adds that so far there has been no apprehension or destruction of machinery. “During the actions, the federal police will act in the 12 largest and main deforestation alert points existing inside the Indigenous Land, as well as in 20 lumber and sawmills that are located in the surroundings of the Karipuna Indigenous Land”, informed the PF, on Thursday. fair, when announcing the operation.
