Ministry launches program to tackle sexual violence in Marajó

The Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC) launched, this Thursday (18), the Marajó Citizenship Program, with the aim of guaranteeing the rights of the population and helping to combat the exploitation and sexual abuse of children and adolescents in the Archipelago. from Marajó, in Pará. According to the folder, the region presents a “scenario of sexual violence against children and adolescents that is especially critical”, which is why it intends to promote “periodic itinerant actions by the National Human Rights Ombudsman (ONDH) to receive reports of human rights violations”. The actions will count on the cooperation of the state government; the Federal Public Ministry (MPF); and the National Council of Justice (CNJ). In the ministry’s assessment, the program represents “a new milestone in the execution of public policies by the federal government in the Marajó Archipelago”. With the institution of the new program, Abrace o Marajó – a program instituted by the previous government, without the participation of civil society and with guests without the right to vote – will be revoked by means of a decree of the Presidency of the Republic, to be edited in the coming days. Social participation According to the ministry, the Marajó Citizenship Program prioritizes “social participation and frequent dialogue with civil society, local communities and other government entities”, with an emphasis on confronting systematic violations of human rights that have occurred. historically in the region. In a note released by the MDHC, the executive secretary, Rita Oliveira, says that the creation of the program was proposed based on an expanded listening with civil society, social movements, representatives of riverside and quilombola communities. “We sent an intersectoral team from the ministry to carry out a survey of the various complexities of the region, as we know that the Marajó archipelago concentrates municipalities with high social vulnerability due to lack of access to basic services, such as sanitation, health equipment, water supply” , highlights. Among the public services to be offered are guardianship councils, Social Assistance Reference Centers and councils to guarantee the rights of children and adolescents. “A series of interministerial articulations to ensure improvements in internet access are also part of the federal government’s strategy; expand the distribution of equipment to care for the riverside population; installation of river bases that can cover, in addition to inspection and policing services, the execution of social policies to promote human rights”, informs the note from the ministry. The federal government also intends to develop border monitoring actions to combat criminal organizations and human trafficking.
