The number of crimes committed against women in the state of São Paulo rose sharply in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period last year. Among the indices that stand out are femicide, which increased by 24%; the threat, which grew 70.8%; and intentional bodily injury, with an increase of 13.8%. The data are from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP). More attention is drawn to the growth rates of crimes such as intentional homicide and attempted murder against women, which had expressive increases and increased well above the registered against the general population – men and women combined. According to SSP data, in the first quarter of 2023 the number of intentional homicides, in which women were victims, totaled 128 cases, an increase of 19.6% compared to the same period of 2022. the general population totaled 719 in the same period, an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period in 2022 – that is, the incidence of crime increased by 19.6% against women and 2.8% against the general population . The same goes for attempted murder. In the first quarter of 2023, they totaled 101 cases against women, an increase of 26.2% compared to the same period of 2022. Attempted homicides against the general population totaled 933 cases, an increase of 13% – that is, crime increased by 26.2% against women and 13% against the general population. The SSP was questioned for its report on the greater increase in intentional homicides and attempted murders against women, compared to that registered against the general population. In a note, the secretariat did not provide a direct response. He stated that the variation in cases of femicide and intentional homicide against women is the subject of permanent analysis by the secretariat. And that 68% of these crimes were provoked due to the affective relationship between the victim and the perpetrator. “The other occurrences were committed by friends or family members. In about 88% of cases, the victim already had a history of domestic violence. The SSP continues to work continuously to improve care for women in vulnerable situations and to train police officers to deal with these situations in a humane way”. Anthropology professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) Heloísa Buarque de Almeida raised some hypotheses that may explain the increase in crimes against women. She recalled that in the 1970s there was also a record of an increase in domestic violence against women when female work outside the home grew. “Just when women gain more power, men feel more threatened, domestic violence increases. Couple violence has a lot to do with something we call a power fantasy, with the guy wanting to control the woman,” she highlighted. She suggests that the claim for more rights by women may be linked to the increase in violence, as a reaction from men. “When the feminist movement grows, women demand more things at home, for example. It usually increases domestic violence, and femicide is linked to domestic violence. Women are murdered, sometimes, when they decide to separate, ”she pointed out.
