Two homeless people died in the capital of São Paulo in the last two cold dawns. The denunciation was made by Father Júlio Lancellotti, who develops important care work with homeless people in São Paulo. According to the priest, the two people would have died as a result of the cold. “Another homeless brother dead on the sidewalk. The same sidewalk where, 500 meters away, is the emergency shelter, which only receives referrals. The humanized approach teams did not find him. The PM found him after he was dead”, wrote the priest today (30), in his social networks. “How many will die this winter? Yesterday one, today another one,” he added. The Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo confirmed one of the deaths to Agência Brasil. “A still unidentified person was found dead, at 4:55 am this Tuesday (30), on Rua Taquaritinga, in Mooca,” said the agency. Officials said there were no signs of violence. The case was registered as a suspicious death in the 8th Police District. Today, the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, commented on the deaths. “First, [quero] regret. Our solidarity with the two people who unfortunately lost lives. We still don’t have information about the reason for the two deaths, we are waiting. The city hall has been doing all the work regarding the low temperatures, regarding the provision of shelters”, he said. “We have shelters for all people who want to take shelter, in addition to offering blankets,” he said. Through a note sent to Agência Brasil, the Municipal Secretariat for Assistance and Social Development (SMADS) informed that, since April 30, when Operation Low Temperatures began, until today morning (30), 60,450 consultations, which resulted in 14,631 admissions. In addition, 35,328 blankets, 207,890 food items (soup, bread, hot chocolate, tea and water) and 1,489 doses of vaccine against Influenza and Covid-19 were distributed. According to information from the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE), this Tuesday morning the average temperature in the city was 15 C. On May 5, the Urban Development Commission of the Chamber of Deputies carried out an inspection of public facilities in the city hall of São Paulo aimed at the homeless population. The intention of the deputies was to investigate the situation of the reception centers in the capital of São Paulo, mainly after articles published by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, which denounced the terrible conditions of hygiene and infrastructure in some equipment of the city hall, with a lack of toilets and showers , bed bug infested mattresses and clogged toilets. The inspection also took place after the São Paulo City Hall intensified actions to collect tents for homeless people, even though it was aware that there are not enough spaces in public shelters to serve this entire population, currently estimated at 52,000 people. On the occasion of this inspection, the Municipal Secretariat for Assistance and Social Development (SMADS) informed Agência Brasil “that the city has the largest socio-assistance network in Latin America with more than 23,000 shelters for homeless people. Among the services are the Welcome Centers, social hotels, Republics for Adults, Vilas Reencontro, emergency services of Operation Low Temperatures, among others”. Also according to the secretariat, “the referrals to the reception services of the social assistance network are carried out according to the individual’s profile and the type of service, respecting the history of the person or family to be welcomed”.
