Officially installed this Tuesday (30), the T20 Brazil Organizing Committee will mobilize research centers and think tanks and will contribute to the production of strategic thinking within the G20. Studies and reflections should be carried out on various topics such as macroeconomics, international trade, technological digitization, clean energy, multilateralism, among others. The 19 largest economies in the world and the European Union have seats in the G20. The group has established itself as a global forum for dialogue and coordination on economic, social, development and international cooperation issues. As of December 1st, Brazil will succeed India in the presidency. It will be the first time that the country assumes this position in the current format of the G20, established in 2008. The Brazilian presidency will be exercised for one year. In November 2024, the G20 Summit is scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro. Three institutions will lead the work of the T20-Brasil Organizing Committee: the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), linked to the Ministry of Planning and Budget; the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (Funag), linked to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and the Brazilian Center for International Relations (Cebri), an independent think tank created to contribute to the discussion of the country’s international agenda. It will be up to them to mobilize other national and foreign entities to produce studies and recommendations during the Brazilian presidency of the G20. “Bringing specialists to debate scenarios and gather evidence, evaluations and indicators are activities that we already develop. This work gains a larger scale because now we are discussing how we are going to organize this together with different think tanks”, said the president of Ipea, Luciana Servo , during the committee installation ceremony. According to her, the objective is to support the inclusion of Brazil in the major key issues of the international agenda, contributing for the country to exercise the leadership to which it proposed. Term The term think tank has been used to designate institutions that promote research and intellectual reflection on issues of social policy, economics, technology and culture. Most of these are non-governmental organizations, but they can also be agencies that have ties to governments, political parties, companies or military forces. According to the president of Funag, ambassador Márcia Loureiro, the discussions of the T20-Brazil Organizing Committee should take into account an international situation where there is a multiplicity of crises. “We still have the effects of the covid-19 pandemic, we have a climate emergency scenario that tends to increase the number of natural disasters, we have the challenge of world economic recovery, we have the challenge of energy transition, armed conflicts and digital transition and their impacts on work. These are issues that, due to their complexity, require collective action. No country will be able to solve these issues alone”, he evaluated. Adriana Erthal Abdenur, special advisor to the President of the Republic, pointed out that the T20-Brasil Organizing Committee has a hybrid composition and will promote the development of reflections through dialogue between government agencies and civil society entities. According to the advisor, the inclusion of population groups that are often not represented in think tanks will be a challenge. “The international financial system feeds inequality, does not solve the problems of sustainable development, nor does it help us to face the climate crisis, much less is it supporting countries to face the great crisis of external debt. We have already detected that there is a need to defend and rescue the 2030 Agenda, which is being systematically undermined in decision-making spaces and instances of global governance”, he added. The 2030 Agenda was drawn up within the framework of the United Nations (UN) and establishes a global plan to achieve a better world for people and nations by 2030. There were 17 sustainable development goals and 169 goals to eradicate poverty and promote a dignified life, approved in an assembly held in 2015 with the participation of 193 countries.
