Lula bets that GDP will grow more than forecast by the IMF

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Thursday (1st) that he is confident with the growth of the Brazilian economy. For him, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the sum of all goods and services produced in the country, should exceed the estimates of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2023. The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) announced today that GDP grew 1.9% in the first quarter of this year, compared to the last three months of last year. “We are going to grow more than the expectation that the IMF is making. As we have already recovered all of our social policies, money begins to circulate among the poorest people in this country. These people become consumers, this consumption generates more commerce. This trade is generating more jobs, this job is generating more wages, this wage is generating more jobs and more consumption. That’s what I’m betting on,” the president told reporters. Lula added that “they will be surprised by our economy”, referring to the fund. In April, the IMF reduced the growth forecast for the Brazilian economy to 0.9% in 2023, below the world average and the average for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the previous report, in January, the forecast was higher, at 1.2%. Lira and positions President Lula denied that the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), had requested positions at the Esplanada dos Ministérios. “It didn’t ask and couldn’t ask, because the PP is an opposition party, and there are people who vote with us”, he replied to the press. “If he asks, we will evaluate it, but until now, I never heard Lira ask for a minister”, he added. The Chamber of Deputies approved on Wednesday night (31) the MP that organizes the ministries of the Lula government. Approval occurred almost at the end of the validity period of the measure, which expired on Thursday (1st). Before the vote, Lira told the press that there was “widespread dissatisfaction” with the government and a possible defeat with the non-approval of the MP should be attributed to the federal government’s lack of articulation.
