Activists for the rights of lesbian women held this Saturday (3) a protest against lesbophobia in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The demonstration was held in front of the Museum of Tomorrow, where, last weekend, a psychologist physically and verbally assaulted two employees, using homophobic and lesbophobic words. The act included speeches and the display of banners with sayings such as “We are lesbian women in the fight” and “Acolhe tu tarde sapatão”. Journalist Camila Marins, who organized the protest, explained that the purpose of the demonstration was to support the victims of the previous week’s aggression and draw society’s attention to the problem of lesbophobia. “Lesbophobia is the hatred of lesbian women. We understand that lesbophobia belongs to society, but also to public authorities, which do not formulate specific public policies for lesbians. There is an erasure of lesbian women in the construction and qualification of public policies”, says the activist, who is the editor of Brejeiras magazine, aimed at the lesbian public. According to Camila, lesbians experience great difficulties in simple everyday situations, such as carrying out preventive exams for women’s health in public units. In addition, there are issues such as the very lack of acceptance within the family. “[Há situações em que a mulher] she suffers from lesbophobia in her own house and is expelled, or she suffers ‘corrective’ rape attempts in the house”, says Camila. The journalist also highlights the risk of lesbocide, which would be the murder of lesbian women because of their sexual orientation. “We have an emblematic case, which is that of Luana Barbosa [assassinada em São Paulo, em 2016]a black woman, peripheral, dyke, savagely beaten, victim of police violence, in which the Brazilian State has not given us any feedback”.
