The 21st edition of the Rio Marathon on the Corpus Christi weekend will bring together 40,000 professional and amateur athletes, in the five events that will be disputed in two days. On Saturday (10) the runners of the 5 km race, which is the shortest, will be on the tracks. In addition to them, those registered for the 21-kilometer half-marathon will participate on the same day. On Sunday (11), there will be a 10-kilometer race and the elite group will do the complete 42-kilometer circuit. The competition also has around 1,900 runners who will participate in the Cidade Maravilhosa Challenge, divided into a half marathon on one day and a full marathon on the next. Depending on the distance of the race, the route starts at Aterro do Flamengo or Leblon beach, passing through points in the south zone of Rio such as the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana and Enseada de Botafogo. In the longer races, the runners will also pass through the center, where they will see the Museum of Tomorrow, in the port area. Since 2019, the marathon circuit does not start in the west of the capital and has started to focus on the south. From then until now, some specific modifications were made to make the race more fluid and faster for the participants. One of the organizers of the marathon, João Traven said that the intention is to get closer to the level of the great marathons in the world. “At the technical level we are equal, what differs our race from these other races is the award. The international corridor that runs through New York, Paris, London, Boston, he knows that we have a seal, the same thing as the others there. So he knows it’s going to be equal proof,” he said. The marathon also receives foreign runners, which in this edition will be around 2 thousand. The organizers of the competition want more and, therefore, intend to partner with the city of Rio to publicize the events in Rio in the other major marathons in the world. There are also participants from outside Rio, which this year correspond to 67% of the total number of participants. In the view of Jued Andari, who is also an organizer, the marathon is one of the highlights of the city’s annual calendar and drives the economy of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. “We receive around 70,000 to 80,000 people at the marathon house on the days of the race. We are redoing this survey because in 2018 there was already R$ 75 million or R$ 80 million in economic activity in the city. This number must be around R$ 130 million today, R$ 140 million for sure. People come here, they run, but they want to visit the Sugar Loaf, they want to go to Corcovado, to a restaurant, take their child for a walk, go to a shopping center. It is a return to the city”, he said in an interview with Rádio Nacional. Music Parallel to the events, the program includes the Arena Maratona com Arte, in Marina da Glória, in Aterro do Flamengo, where a music festival will take place with the presence of singers Mart’nália and Toni Garrido, among other artists. Entry is free. The animation of the runners and fans who follow the races is guaranteed at various points of the course with the participation of several carnival blocks. Conservation The structure of the marathon also includes actions to preserve the environment. Partnerships with collectors’ cooperatives will result in the reuse of 90% of the waste produced, including the packaging for the 800,000 glasses of water that will be distributed to the corridors. Aulão According to the organization, this Thursday, those who pick up the Marathon kits at Marina da Glória will be able to enjoy the Puga Team’s aulão, animation by the Fanfarrinha block and a presentation by the Imperial Orchestra. Tomorrow (9), the aulão will be held by Thi Squad and there will be a show by the group Cozinha Arrumada. *In collaboration with Tâmara Freire, from Radiojornalismo
