Caio Souza, from Rio de Janeiro, was the country’s first athlete on the podium in the stage of the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Osijek, Croatia. This Saturday (10), the Brazilian won bronze on the parallel bars. The Ukrainian Illia Kovtun secured the gold, leaving the silver medal with the Turkish Ferhat Arican, third placed in the device at the Tokyo Olympics, in Japan, in 2021. Caio, who secured himself in the final of the bars with the second best grade of the phase classification (14,350), improved the performance, obtaining a 14,533 in the presentation this Saturday. It wasn’t enough, however, to top Kovtun’s 15,133 score. Arican, who had scored 13,850 on Thursday, this time reached a score of 14,966, ahead of the Brazilian. The gymnast from Volta Redonda (RJ) will have three other finals ahead of him on Sunday (11), starting at 9:50 am (Brasília time), broadcast by the Brazilian Olympic Channel: jump (in which he had the best score in the classification phase ), fixed bar and rings. Yuri Guimarães (jump), Arthur Nory (fixed bar, in which he was leader of the qualifying stage) and Arthur Zanetti (rings) from São Paulo will also be in contention for medals. Still this Saturday, Nory and Yuri competed in the ground finals, but were left without a medal. The former – owner of an Olympic bronze medal in the apparatus won at the Rio de Janeiro Games, in 2016 – ended the dispute in Osijek in fourth place, with a score of 13,666, while the compatriot was seventh (out of eight gymnasts), with 12,500. Bulgarian Eddie Penev (14,100) secured gold, with Turk Ahmet Onder (13,800) and Hungarian Krisztofer Meszaros (13,733) completing the podium. In the women’s category, Lorrane Oliveira was also close to a medal in Osijek. The gymnast from Rio was fourth in the uneven bars final, with a score of 12,866. Dutchwoman Naomi Visser won gold (14,333). Australia’s Georgia Godwin (13,700) took silver. Slovakian Barbora Mokosova (13,300) took bronze. The stages of the World Cup serve as a preparation for the Antwerp World Cup, in Belgium, between September 30th and October 8th. The competition will serve as a classification for the men’s and women’s teams to go to the Paris Games, in France, next year. The teams will have to be among the top nine of their respective genders, not counting those that have already secured themselves at the Olympics in the previous edition of the championship, held in Liverpool (Great Britain), in 2022.
