The Brazilian government’s participation in the 111th session of the International Labor Conference (CIT) begins today (12) with a bilateral meeting between the Minister of Labor and Employment, Luiz Marinho, and the director general of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Gilbert F. Houngbo, Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting is part of the activities of the conference, which began work on Monday (5) and will continue until June 16. The event is attended by representatives of workers, governments and employers from 187 member states of the ILO. The conference, held entirely in person for the first time since 2019, aims to discuss various issues related to the world of work, especially a fair transition to sustainable and inclusive economies, quality learning and, also, the protection of workers. and workers. During the event, the proposed convention and recommendation on the partial revision of 15 international labor instruments will be discussed. The measure takes place after the inclusion of a safe and healthy work environment in the framework of the ILO’s fundamental principles and rights at work. In addition, the organization’s Commission for the Application of Norms will also debate, as a central theme, the achievement of equality between women and men at work. Agenda The minister’s agenda at the conference will run until the 16th. On Monday afternoon, Marinho will speak at the plenary session at the Palácio das Nações. The agenda includes meetings with the director of the ILO Standards Department, Corinne Vargha, and with the Minister of Labor of India, Bhupender Yadav. Marinho will participate in a lunch hosted by the secretary of Labor and Social Security of Mexico, Luisa Maria Alcade Luján, and should sign a memorandum of understanding with the United States. The minister also participates in the Summit on the World of Work, whose theme is Social Justice for All. During the summit, lectures and panel discussions will be held, bringing together heads of state and government, the director general of the ILO and high-level representatives of the United Nations, other international organizations and employers’ and workers’ organizations. Discussions will be held on quality learning; discussion on the strategic objective of social protection (labour protection); just transition, including consideration of industrial and technology policies, towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies for all. Opening Opening the 111th session, the Director-General of the ILO emphasized the need to launch a global coalition with the aim of “balancing environmental, economic and social considerations in the global conversation, including the reform of the international financial architecture” and “advocating for coherence of policies and investment in social protection and decent work”. “The fourth industrial revolution that promises a radical transformation of production methods, demographic upheavals and the imperative need to decarbonize the economy are opportunities for a better future for all of us”, said the director general. “But at the same time, 4 billion of our fellow citizens lack social protection and 214 million workers earn less than the poverty line.
