The Ministry of Justice and Public Security authorized the deployment of the National Public Security Force (FNSP) to the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous Land, in the state of Rondônia, for 90 days. The measure was published this Monday (12), in the Official Gazette of the Union, in an ordinance that also defines logistical support for the military by the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai). In February, a request from the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office for protection of the area resulted in a court ordering the elaboration and execution of a protection plan for the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau indigenous territory. The action was motivated by reports of environmental crimes and invasions of indigenous lands. Previous study In a note, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security informed that the FNSP agents will arrive in Rondônia this Monday (12). According to the communiqué, the total number of soldiers who will act in the region is based on a previous study on the need for carrying out the operation. The note also informs that “for reasons of security for the police teams and the indigenous people, we do not disclose numbers of agents deployed for ongoing operations”. According to the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), the region covers more than 1.8 million hectares and has been approved as an indigenous territory since 1991. Nine indigenous peoples live there: the Jupaú, or Uru-eu-wau-wau; the Oro Win; the Amondawa and the Cabixi; in addition to five other isolated peoples, still without contact with non-indigenous people.
