A man was found dead this Tuesday (13) in Ipiranga, in the south zone of São Paulo, informed Father Julio Lancellotti, who develops assistance and care work for homeless people in the capital of São Paulo. According to the priest, the man may have died of hypothermia, due to the cold. “Another case of hypothermia in the city of São Paulo, of a person who went to an emergency shelter and slept on the mattress, without a cover. He was thrown out [do abrigo] at 7 am, without a blanket, and went into hypothermia”, denounced the priest in a video posted today on his social networks. According to the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) of São Paulo, Tuesday began with an overcast morning, isolated drizzle and a slight feeling of cold in the capital of São Paulo, with thermometers averaging around 15°C. The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) of São Paulo confirmed that a man, still unidentified, was found dead around 8 am this morning on Avenida Nazaré, in Ipiranga. According to the SSP, the case was registered as a suspicious death in the 16th Police District, in Vila Clementino. The secretary reported that, as the person has not yet been identified, it was not possible to confirm that he was in a street situation. The cause of death is being investigated. On May 30, Father Julio had reported the death of two people on the streets because of the cold. According to the priest, on the 5th of this month, there was another death that may have been caused by the cold in the city of São Paulo. Sought by Agência Brasil, the Municipal Secretariat for Social Assistance and Social Development reported that the man’s death is under police investigation. With the impossibility of obtaining personal data, there is no way to determine whether or not the person found dead has a history of being taken in by the socio-assistance network of the city of São Paulo. “It is important to emphasize that the cause of death is determined by the competent services, that is, the Legal Medical Institute and the Death Verification Service”, says a note sent by the secretariat. Inspection On May 5th, the Urban Development Commission of the Chamber of Deputies carried out an inspection of public facilities in the São Paulo City Hall aimed at the homeless population. The deputies went to investigate the situation of reception centers in the capital of São Paulo, mainly after reports published by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, which denounced the terrible conditions of hygiene and infrastructure in some equipment of the city hall, with lack of toilets and showers, mattresses infested with bed bugs and clogged toilets. The inspection took place after the São Paulo City Hall intensified actions to collect tents for homeless people, even though it was aware that there are not enough spaces in public shelters to serve this entire population, currently estimated at 52,000 people.
