The city of São Sebastião, on the north coast of São Paulo, is in a state of alert due to the heavy rains that hit the city since Monday night (12). According to the municipal Civil Defense, in the region of Juquehy, for example, 114.2 millimeters of rain were recorded in less than 24 hours. Several streets were flooded, and residents of risk areas, according to the Civil Defense, are being informed about the situation. “It is important to emphasize that residents in risk areas must leave their homes in cases of flooding, flooding or landslides, following the guidelines previously provided”, informed the city hall. So far, according to the municipal administration, there have been no reports of homelessness. Because of the rains, the city hall decided to suspend classes today in the regions of Juquehy, Barra do Sahy and Cambury, as some streets became impassable, preventing the locomotion of school buses. Almost four months ago, during Carnival, the city of São Sebastião was hit by heavy rains, which caused the death of 64 people. This was one of the greatest tragedies in the state’s history. It was also the highest amount of rain ever recorded in the country, reaching 626 millimeters in São Sebastião. The neighborhood most affected at that time was Vila do Sahy. The municipal Civil Defense also warned of the formation of undertows at sea, with waves that can reach 2.5 meters in height. The forecast of heavy rains and storm surges should persist until the end of this week. In the event of an emergency, the City Hall advises residents to call the Civil Defense (199) or Fire Department (193) phones. According to the state Civil Defense, the alert for “heavy and continuous rains” applies to the entire coast of São Paulo. The heaviest rains should reach Baixada Santista, the south and north coasts, in addition to the Ribeira Valley, which is further south of the state.
