“The sertão is my center”. This is how Bahian filmmaker Geraldo Sarno (1938-2022) once defined his work in an interview with the Papo de Cinema website. One of the most respected directors and screenwriters in the country, Sarno now has an unprecedented retrospective of his work at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB), in São Paulo. Free, the retrospective began this Saturday (17th) and continues until July 9th, showing almost all of the director’s filmography, who has always worked a lot with themes such as the sertão, popular religiosity, cordel literature, cangaço and migration. Among them, his latest work, the award-winning Sertânia, a film that projects Antão’s feverish and delirious mind. Viramundo will also be shown, which shows the arrival of people from the Northeast to the city of São Paulo; Casa Grande e Senzala, based on the book of the same name by Gilberto Freyre; and Eu Carrego o Sertão Dentro de Mim, with narration based on a text by writer João Guimarães Rosa. The retrospective also includes two new digitizations of films that have been rarely shown in recent decades, such as Iaô and Plantar nas Estrelas. In addition to showing the films, the exhibition will hold two live debate tables to reflect on the filmmaker’s work.
