From January to April this year, 2.7 million foreign tourists visited Brazil. The number already represents 75% of the volume recorded throughout the year 2022. These tourists spent around R$ 10 billion on Brazilian land. The data show, according to the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, that tourism is the “big Brazilian industry of the 21st century”. “We need to bring the debate on tourism closer to the debate on the economy, employment, development. Tourism is not just leisure, it is associated with work, the economy, job creation. Tourism is for me the great Brazilian industry of the 21st century. And Brazil has an enormous tourist potential”, said Marcelo Freixo in an interview with the program Brasil em Pauta, which will air this Sunday (18), at 22:30, on TV Brasil . “What is the economic activity that, in four months, leaves R$ 10 billion in the country? They are few. So, we have great expectations that tourism will generate a lot of jobs,” said Freixo. The expectation, according to Marcelo Freixo, is that, this year, the number of foreign tourists in the country exceeds 6 million. He said that Embratur works together with mayors, governors, public managers and the private sector to increasingly train and improve tourist services in Brazil. An instrument that helps in this task, according to Freixo, is the Brazilian Tourism Map, which has information on which cities in each state have the potential to receive foreign tourists; which nationalities most visit each location; what type of tourism they seek and what are the main areas of employment generation. Detailed information on the map was delivered to the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger to guide the qualification of labor locally. “We are looking for tourism to effectively be an economic and social development action that generates jobs and has public policy”, he said. Increasing the number of international flights to Brazil to facilitate the arrival of foreigners is another front on which Embratur works. Marcelo Freixo said that he talks frequently with airline representatives and hears from them that they are interested in expanding the number of flights. “The more flights we have, the cheaper the ticket will be”, he believes.
