President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, this Monday morning (19), in Brasília, that the preservation of the Amazon involves taking care of the poor residents who live in the region. The statement was made during his weekly Conversation with the President program. “Taking care of the environment is necessary to take care of the poor people who live in these regions”, he said. In the president’s evaluation, the discussion of the theme needs to cover the well-being of the population. “Usually, we talk about the Amazon, the Atlantic Forest, which is normal, but it is important for us to remember that we must discuss the stilt houses. We must discuss the degradation where human beings live”, he observed. “Whenever we talk about the environmental issue, we have to remember the people who live in these regions who need to live with dignity”, he added. On Saturday (17), the president was in Belém to announce the holding of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 30), in the capital of Pará, in 2025. The event is considered the largest and most important world summit related to the planet’s climate . Around 50,000 visitors are expected to visit the city, including dozens of heads of state and diplomatic representatives. “We ‘run the risk’ of making the most beautiful COP that has ever been held, because one thing is to discuss the Amazon in Egypt, another thing is to discuss the Amazon in Berlin, another thing is to discuss the Amazon in Paris. discuss the importance of the Amazon within the Amazon. We are going to discuss the indigenous issue looking at the indigenous people. We are going to discuss the issue of the riverside peoples looking at the riverside peoples and seeing how they live. Because when we talk about preservation, something we have to preserve there are 50 million people who live in the Amazon of South America”, he argued. Housing programs The President of the Republic criticized the construction of popular houses of 15 square meters, announced by the city hall of Campinas (SP). “That thing about the mayor building a 15m² house, if this trend catches on, in a little while we will be building jumpers so that the people can live. It is absurd of the absurd. It is necessary that we, within this environmental policy, do not lose the sense of dignity of the poor people of that country or of developing countries that have forest reserves”, he pointed out. According to Lula, two million houses will be built by December 31, 2026, when his mandate ends. “These houses will be not only for the poorest people, but also [vamos] make houses for the middle sector of society. Of that worker who earns R$ 8 [mil]BRL 9 [mil], of the small entrepreneur, that person who works on their own. We are going to try to make a house for those who can afford it a little better and also have a financing system, ”he said. Also on the trip to Pará, Lula participated in the delivery of 222 houses from the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program. The houses are part of the Residencial Angelin, which had been paralyzed for the last four years, according to the federal government, and will now serve 888 people who fall into the program’s 1st band, the one aimed at families with a gross monthly income of up to Rs. $2640.
