President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced this Monday (19) that he will discuss with Pope Francis solutions to the war between Russia and Ukraine. Lula leaves for Rome on Monday night (19), where he will meet with the pontiff, the president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella and the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri. “He is very interested in ending the war in Ukraine and Russia and I also want to talk to him about this issue of peace,” he said during the weekly program Conversa with the President. Inequality around the world will also be discussed with Pope Francis. According to Lula, the perspective is that a world campaign be built to address the issue. “I want to use my mandate as President of the Republic to try to create a worldwide awareness that it is not explainable, that we are not indignant against hunger and against the lack of food on a planet that produces more food than we consume,” he said. . “The problem is not a lack of production, but a lack of distribution. It is a lack of money to buy food,” he added. Lula stated that he will invite the pontiff to participate in the Círio de Nazaré, one of the main religious festivals in the country held annually in Belém. International agenda On Thursday (22), the president will participate in the Summit for a New Global Financial Compact, in Paris. Among the issues on the bilateral agenda is the approval, last week, by the National Assembly of France of a resolution against the ratification of the free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. “I’m having lunch with [Emanuel] Macron [presidente da França]. I want to discuss the question of the French parliament that approved the tightening of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. The European Union cannot try to threaten Mercosur with punishment if Mercosur does not comply with this or that. If we are strategic partners, we don’t have to make threats,” he said. Still in the French capital, Lula will deliver the closing speech at the Power Our Planet event, at the invitation of the band Coldplay. The event will take place at Campo de Marte, in front of the Eiffel tower. . Energy transition Lula stated that he intends to call the world’s attention to the energy issue and show that, in Brazil, 87% of electricity is renewable. “The world has 27% [de energia elétrica renovável]. Of our energy matrix as a whole, involving fuel, 50% is clean and renewable. The rest of the world only has 15%. So, for the love of God, instead of criticizing Brazil, look up to Brazil, because now we are going to do much more”, he said. The president stated that the country has potential for investments in new energy sources, such as green hydrogen, generated by renewable energy or by low-carbon energy. “We are going to invest a lot in [energia] wind, solar energy, we are going to continue investing in biomass and now we are going to invest a lot in green hydrogen because the world needs it and Brazil can produce and export green hydrogen to the whole world. The country is already the center of the world when discussing the issue of energy transition, of a new energy matrix,” he said.
