The government of the state of Rio de Janeiro confirmed two more cases of avian influenza H5N1 in migratory wild birds of the terns-de-bando species, in the district of Ilha do Governador, north of the capital, and in Angra dos Reis, coast of Green Coast. This brings the total number of cases to ten. However, there is no record of infected people. The State Departments of Health (SES) and Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Supply (Seappa) guide the population not to touch wild birds with signs of disease. Citizens should call the number 193 of the Fire Department or immediately notify the Agricultural Defense unit in the region or the Coordination of Environmental Surveillance in their municipality. Contact can only be made by qualified professionals using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Infection Avian flu is not transmitted by eating poultry meat or eggs. Human infections with the Avian Influenza virus occur through direct contact with infected birds (dead or alive). Of the ten cases registered in the state, four were in São João da Barra; two in Niteroi; one in Cabo Frio; two in the city of Rio de Janeiro; and one in Angra dos Reis. Health Surveillance technicians at SES-RJ point out that there is no cause for concern for the population about the H5N1 epidemic, as so far there is no direct transmission from person to person.
