President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, this Wednesday (21), in Rome, that he will seek rapprochement between Brazil and Italy over the next year, when the two countries will assume, respectively, the rotating presidencies of the G20 and of the G7. The G20 brings together 19 of the largest economies on the planet and the European Union, while the G7 is a group of developed countries made up of Japan, Canada, Italy, the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The declaration took place after a meeting between the Brazilian president and the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, at the Palace of Chigi, seat of the Italian government. “I spoke with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, about the relations between our countries, especially at this moment when Italy assumes the presidency of the G7 and Brazil will assume the presidency of the G20 in November”, highlighted Lula, in a post in the social media. The Italian government took over management of the G7 in May, during the group’s summit in Japan, and will host the next meeting of heads of government next year. Brazil will take over the G20 at the end of the year, after the organization’s summit to be held in New Delhi, India. Lula also invited the prime minister to visit Brazil. Agenda in Italy On the agenda for this Wednesday (21), Lula also met with the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri. During the meeting, the president highlighted that the trip to Italy meant the resumption of the country’s leading role in global discussions on the environment. “Tomorrow [22]at 8:30 am, I’m going to give a press conference because my trip to Italy was, from my point of view, to put Brazil back at the center of discussions on the climate issue in the world.” At the meeting, Lula thanked the mayor of Rome for solidarity. Gualtieri visited Lula during the period he was imprisoned in Curitiba, within the scope of Operation Lava Jato.At the time, in July 2018, the mayor was serving as an MEP.
