The executive secretary of the Comptroller General of the Union (CGU), Vânia Vieira, said, this Thursday (22), that prevention is one of the current focuses of the body to curb corruption. According to Vânia, the CGU understands that there is room to improve the fight against corruption, mainly through prevention. Currently, there is a lot of accumulated knowledge about the most vulnerable situations, where the problems are, which are the bodies and areas most susceptible to the occurrence of corruption, said the secretary, after participating in the 10th International Compliance Congress. For the CGU executive secretary, it is necessary to pay special attention to situations in which private companies and the public sector cooperate very closely. “In all sectors where there is proximity between the public and the private, it is natural that improprieties, misconduct occur, and we need to put a greater magnifying glass in these cases”, she said. According to Vânia, this form of action is used internationally. “That’s how the whole world works, identifying risks and doing appropriate risk management to prevent problems from happening.” Despite highlighting the advances brought by the Anti-Corruption Law, which came into force ten years ago, the secretary highlighted the need for continuous effort by the CGU to face illegalities in public administration. “We cannot depend only on the cooperation of companies. For this reason, the CGU has its own methods, whether through audits and inspections, or through the special operations that the CGU carries out with the Federal Police”, she emphasized. The Anti-Corruption Law reduces fines for companies that identify cases of corruption and spontaneously report them to the authorities. In April, the CGU launched a tool that allows the automatic calculation of sanctions, as a way of supporting the decisions of companies and law firms involved in cases where there is conduct that is harmful to public property. In 2023, the Comptroller General of the Union already imposed R$ 600 million in fines and entered into 25 leniency agreements in cases of corruption.
