At least 49 children are waiting for an intensive care unit (ICU) bed in the public network of the state of Pernambuco due to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). There are still ten newborns in line for a bed in the neonatal ICU because of the disease. Governor Raquel Lyra decreed a public health emergency for a period of 90 days due to the high occupancy rates of pediatric and neonatal ICU beds caused by the increase in SARS cases in the state. In a note, the Health Department of Pernambuco reported that the scenario is due to the seasonality of the pediatric flu, a period in which respiratory diseases have had a great impact on the state’s health systems. “The opening of new neonatal ICUs is complex, as professionals need specific training. However, management clarifies that it continues to work to open new beds ”, reported the folder.
