Defense will fight illegal mining in Yanomami Indigenous Land

This Thursday (22nd), the federal government published a decree that changes the actions of the Ministry of Defense against illegal mining and the fight against the Public Health Emergency of National Importance in Yanomami territory. Previously, the folder, which brings together the Army, Navy and Air Force, was only responsible for providing intelligence and air and logistical transport data. With the change, the Ministry of Defense starts to act in the execution of preventive and repressive actions against cross-border and environmental crimes, in the land border region and also in the rivers and lakes of the region. The military will act in patrolling actions, searching people, land vehicles, vessels and aircraft, and arrests in flagrante delicto. Previously, direct action in the Yanomami territory was under the responsibility of the National Security Force, the Federal Police and the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama). The exception was the airspace that was under the command of the Air Force. The access of people to the Yanomami territory continues to be controlled by measures of the Ministries of Health and Indigenous Peoples, to control the transmission of diseases. In addition to the new forms of action, the actions provided for in the previous decree were maintained.
