Paralympic swimmer Gabriel Araújo made history again this Thursday morning (22) by breaking the world record in the 50-meter butterfly race, class S2 (physical-motor impairment), on the first day of the Brazilian Swimming Championship, competition which brings together 261 athletes until next Saturday (24) at the Paralympic Training Center, in São Paulo. The feat was achieved because the miner completed the race in 52s96, surpassing the 53s80 registered in the World Series of Sheffield (England) in March. The national competition meets all the criteria established by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), but the Minas Gerais record still needs to be approved by the World Para Swimming (WPA), the entity that governs world Paralympic swimming. 🚨 WORLD RECORD ALERT! I train very hard to improve more and more. I am honored and thrilled to achieve so many marks at the Paralympic Training Centre. It shows that I’m on the right path. And, despite not being part of the Worlds, the time I did in the 50-metre butterfly shows that I am well prepared for the competition in Manchester”, declared the 21-year-old athlete, Paralympic champion in the 50-metre backstroke and 200-metre freestyle at the Games from Tokyo. Gabriel is one of the 29 Brazilians called up for the Paralympic Swimming World Championship, which will be held in Manchester (England), between July 31st and August 6th.
