Rio de Janeiro was the stage this Friday (23) of an act for the climate and against socio-environmental dismantling. Initiatives with the same purpose have already taken place in Belo Horizonte, Florianópolis, São Paulo and Brasília. The event occupied Cinelândia, the central region of the city, and brought together organizations, collectives, representatives of native peoples, political and popular parties. Next week, similar events will be held in Ceará and Goiás. The idea is to visit all the country’s capitals, according to the national coordinator of the Brazilian Forum of NGOs and Social Movements (FBOMS), Pedro Ivo. The act, according to Pedro Ivo, is a protest against the cut promoted by the National Congress in the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and Indigenous Peoples (MPI), although there have already been vetoes by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the law dealing with the basic organization of the bodies of the Presidency of the Republic and the restructuring of ministries. “In addition to the ministerial restructuring part, we are against this process of retrogression, such as the Temporal Framework, which is an insult”, stated the FBOMS coordinator. “It’s as if the whites were here and the indigenous invaded their land.” For Pedro Ivo, Congress wants to “systematically implement policies against the environment and indigenous peoples”. The purpose of the act is to draw public attention to these issues. The concern is that the measures approved by parliamentarians have an even greater impact on climate change. According to the organizers, the call against socio-environmental dismantling came after the approval of Provisional Measure 1,150, which impacts the restoration of forests and opens up opportunities for more deforestation in the Atlantic Forest; the MP 1154 report, which empties the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change (MMA) and Indigenous Peoples (MPI); and Bill 490, the Temporal Framework, which threatens the demarcation of indigenous territories.
