In five months, security forces in Rio de Janeiro seized 321 rifles, about two a day, the highest number in the last 16 years. This result represents an increase of 57% compared to the same period last year. In the month of May alone, 57 large-caliber weapons were seized. In the same period, 3,138 weapons were seized, 600 of which in May, which means an average of 20 weapons per day since the beginning of the year. In comparison with the accumulated of 2022, the increase was 10%. The data released this Friday (23) by the Public Security Institute (ISP) refer to the records of occurrences drawn up in the Civil Police stations of the State of Rio. Deaths by intervention of state agents dropped 16% from January to May. There were 480 deaths in the first five months of 2023, 66 of which in May. In the monthly analysis, the reduction was 53% in May, the lowest number for the month since 2015. According to the ISP, in five months, 108 people were arrested in flagrante delicto per day, an increase of 15%, totaling 16,340 since the beginning of 2023. In comparison with the accumulated of 2022, the increase was 15%. In addition, vehicle recovery also recorded a 26% increase in the period. There were 6,519 vehicles recovered in five months, which corresponds to 43 vehicles per day. According to the ISP, street robberies (robbery from passers-by, cell phone and collective robberies) had the lowest number of cases in the state since 2005 – there were 21,901 robberies in 2023 against 25,858 in the same period of the previous year, a decrease of 15%. Regarding drug seizures, there were 9,629 records in the first five months of the year, with 2,243 in May. This means that, in 2023, there were 63 drug seizure records per day. In comparison with the accumulated of 2022, the increase was 8%.
