The fire at a sanitary landfill in Teresópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, spread across the city, causing inconvenience to the population this Monday morning (26). According to the municipal government, classes were suspended in schools close to the fire. The prefecture also recommends the use of masks by people suffering from respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. The fire reached Fischer’s landfill around 5:00 am. In a note released around 10 am, the city hall reported that the smoke had already dissipated in some places. The situation is expected to return to normal in the coming hours. According to the prefecture, the suspicion is that the fire was arson. Investigations to determine the causes of the incident and identify possible perpetrators have already begun.
