In May, the state of São Paulo recorded a drop in the number of intentional homicides [intencionais]robbery [roubo seguido de morte] and theft. However, there was an increase in the number of rapes and thefts in the state. Statistical data on crime for the month of May were released today (26) by the São Paulo State Secretariat for Public Security (SSP-SP). In the case of homicides, 195 cases were recorded last month, a decrease of 14.5% compared to May 2022, when 228 cases were registered. According to the secretariat, this is the lowest number of homicides recorded for a month of May in the last 23 years. Considering the accumulated figures for the five months of the year, the number is also the lowest in the historical series, which began in 2001. There were 1,136 homicides in 2023 and 1,168 in 2022, a drop of 2.7%. With regard to robbery, they went from 13 records in May last year to 12 this year. Thefts went from 19,749 records in May last year to 19,254 in 2023, a reduction of 2.5%. Last month, the SSP-SP announced the creation of a working group to review criminal statistics for 2022. According to the folder, the Information and Prevention System for Crimes against Life (SPVida) was created to make cases available in the map format and through the incident reports, “also enabling the population to audit what is being published, increasing transparency”. Rapes and thefts On the other hand, the state of São Paulo continues to register an upward trend in cases of rape. The high was 18.5% in May this year, with 1,299 registered cases. One of the reasons that would explain this increase, said the secretariat, was a change in the law. Prior to 2018, criminal proceedings were public subject to representation. “The police could only act with the authorization of older victims. Now, the action has become public unconditionally: the police have to act independently of the will of the victims”, informed the folder. “Rape is one of the most underreported crimes, a thesis proven by the Brazilian Public Security Forum and several other institutes that study the subject. Therefore, the number of rapes can be up to four times greater than what we have recorded. However, the constant dissemination of information about these crimes, how to report, about the rights and possibilities of the victims, increases the records, as the victims understand and are strengthened in denouncing”, said the delegate Jamila Jorge Ferrari, coordinator of the Women’s Defense Police Stations , by note. “The two years of the pandemic and the closed schools have also, in some way, retained the data, since schools are very important in detecting these crimes”, she added. Statistical data released today also showed a 1.7% increase in theft records in May, with 50,171 registered cases.
