Coach Pia Sundhage announced, this Tuesday (27), at the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), in Rio de Janeiro, the 23 players called up to defend the women’s national team in the 2023 World Cup, which will be played from the 20th of July in Australia and New Zealand. The Swede also revealed the names of the three substitutes, who will travel with the delegation and may be used in any case of injury. Among those summoned is Queen Marta. The 37-year-old star will compete in the competition for the sixth and probably last time. Top scorer in the history of the World Cups, between women and men, with 17 goals, the Orlando Pride (United States) attacking midfielder is the oldest player among those called up, while substitute Aline Gomes, aged 17, is the youngest from the list. Now it’s for real! 🇬🇧The list of the 2️⃣3️⃣ players who will represent the #Women’s Team at @FIFAWWC is out! Let’s go together for the first star! ⭐️🎨: Junior Souza / CBF pic.twitter.com/tudZljD2cX — Women’s National Football Team (@SelecaoFeminina) June 27, 2023 Most of the players named by Pia play abroad. Thus, a trend from the last World Cup, in France, was maintained, when 18 of those called up also worked outside Brazil. In this Tuesday’s summons, the North American league is the one with the most representatives, with a total of seven. In second place appears the Spanish league, with six players. In addition, there are eight names linked to teams in the country, with emphasis on Corinthians, current three-time national champion, with four called up. Four other Brazilian clubs will also have representatives in the Cup: Flamengo, Santos, Palmeiras and Ferroviária (with substitute Aline). “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players. We tested 90 athletes and I was very excited, as almost half of the team has never been to a World Cup. We have many dreams among the younger ones, and the more experienced ones help the team. This is very special. After four years, it’s the perfect time for the World Cup”, declared coach Pia Sundhage at the opening of the press conference. On Sunday (2), at 10:30 am (Brasília time), Pia’s men will face Chile at Mané Garrincha Stadium, in Brasília, in a last friendly before the trip to the World Cup. Next Sunday there’s #SeleçãoFeminina on the field! 💚💛 So, have you secured your ticket yet? Let’s go together in the last friendly match before the World Cup! ) June 26, 2023 Brazil was drawn in Group F, based in Australia, alongside Panama, France and Jamaica. The debut will be against the Panamanians, on the 24th of July, at 8am, in Adelaide. On the 29th, at 7 am, it will be the turn to face the French, in Brisbane. Participation in the first phase will come to an end on August 2, again at 7 am, against the Jamaicans, in Melbourne. The women’s team is looking for an unprecedented title. Pia herself, despite being a two-time Olympic champion in 2008 and 2012, both in command of the USA, is trying to win the World Cup for the first time in her career. In the 2011 edition, held in Germany, the coach reached the decision, but the North Americans were defeated by Japan. As a player, the Swede has a third place, in the 1991 World Cup, the first in history, played in China. Pia took over the Brazilian team in 2019, after the last Cup, replacing Vadão. Over four years, the Swede worked with 92 different athletes and led the national team in 53 games: with 32 wins, 12 draws, nine defeats, 120 goals scored and 40 conceded. The Copa America title, in July 2022, in Colombia, ensured qualification for the Paris Olympics (France), next year. She will be the first woman to lead Brazil in an adult World Cup.
