Part of the R$ 6 billion in loans from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for sustainable development projects in Brazil will be applied in the Pantanal and in the North Region to promote Brazil at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30), in Belém, in November 2025. There will be R$ 2 billion, equivalent to US$ 400 million, for each of these regions. The information was disclosed this Wednesday (28) by the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, in an interview with the program Bom Dia, Ministro, produced by Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC). The programs for the Pantanal and for the North Region are under construction with the IDB. However, the global amount of the credit was authorized in 2022. The details for implementing the projects still need to be defined. In addition, the feature needs Senate approval and must be implemented within six years. “It is something that we want to leave as a legacy during the period of President Lula’s government, the implementation of these sustainable production programs”, said the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, to Agência Brasil. The minister added that the resources should be used to recover areas or biomes that have suffered from bad weather or the progress of environmental degradation. The credit line for the North Region will be destined to agroforestry programs, which will also be designed by the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change and Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture. According to Minister Carlos Fávaro, President Lula’s idea is to show the world, during COP30, that it is possible to develop agriculture while preserving the environment. “[São] Agroforestry and sustainable development programs for the north of the country and anchored there in the Belém region, so that this becomes a showcase for the world to learn about Brazilian models of sustainable production during the 2025 COP”, explained the minister to the Agency Brazil. Pantanal Another portion of the credit line made available by the IDB will be used in the Pantanal in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. According to Carlos Fávaro, the fires that consumed the biome in recent years discouraged livestock production in the region. Therefore, US$ 400 million will be allocated to recovery, incentive and sustainable production projects in the Pantanal. AgroNordeste Unlike programs for the North and Pantanal, IDB loans for the Northeast Region are already in the project signature phase. US$ 330 million were allocated to the AgroNordeste program, which will also receive a complement of US$ 70 million. The AgroNordeste program plans to “increase the adoption of climate-smart agricultural technologies, integrating producers into value chains; increase legal security and environmental regularization of rural properties and improve the phytosanitary conditions of fruit crops”, according to an IDB document.
