The Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC), of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), signed a memorandum of understanding with the Agostinho Neto University (UAN), in Luanda, Angola, aiming at future partnerships in teaching and research between the institutions. In Fiocruz’s assessment, the partnership represents another step in the search for closer ties with African institutions. The objective is mutual collaboration in the areas of neglected tropical diseases, with emphasis on malaria and tuberculosis; communicable diseases; arboviruses; antimicrobial resistance (AMR); HIV; climate and health; maternal, child and reproductive health; among others. The memorandum of understanding lasts for five years. Human resources The coordinator of the IOC’s Institutional Cooperation, Anna Cristina Calçada Carvalho, pointed out that the institutional cooperation policy aims to reinforce technical-scientific partnerships with countries in the southern hemisphere, especially those in Portuguese. “The focus of the IOC is on contributing to the training of human resources in these places. We can help them face public health problems linked, especially, to communicable diseases”, said Anna Cristina, in a note. She also recalled that all the Institute’s Stricto sensu Graduate Programs are involved in the partnership. “Fiocruz and the IOC have a long history of collaboration with Angola and Mozambique. In previous agreements signed for the training of human resources, more than fifty people were awarded masters or doctors”, she commented. The next step will be to elaborate, together with the UAN, a work plan to continue the partnership. A meeting is already scheduled for August with representatives of the Angolan university to deal with the matter.
