The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA) created a working group (GT) to monitor the environmental measures provided for in the action plan of the National Coordination Committee to Combat Sanitary Lack of Assistance for Populations in Yanomami Territory. The decision was published this Monday (3), in the Official Gazette (DOU), and takes effect on July 7. Called GT Yanomami, the group will operate for one year and will be composed of twelve members divided into an equal number of members and alternates from the federal public service, with representation from environmental agencies, traditional communities and rural development. According to the Federal Police, the actions implemented now in 2023 have meant that the number of illegal mining alerts in the Yanomami Territory has drastically decreased, compared to previous years, since monitoring of the region began in August 2020. Crimes environmental The Armed Forces also reported that the intensification of actions to combat environmental crimes in the region resulted in a 90% drop in clandestine flights in the Yanomami Indigenous Land. However, a survey by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation pointed out the presence of mercury in indigenous people and in fish present in the rivers of the indigenous territory. The meetings of the Yanomami WGs will take place fortnightly with a minimum quorum of three members, who may participate in person, in the Federal District or by videoconference. The MMA executive secretary will lead the work and provide technical and administrative support for the meetings. The body may also invite specialists and technicians from the ministry itself and from other public and private bodies and entities to participate in the meetings.
