Brazil received 2.97 million international tourists in the first five months of 2023. The number is 108% higher than that registered from January to May last year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the month of May was one of the highlights: more than 292,300 people visited the country, which represents an increase of 44.5% compared to the same month in 2022. Most international tourists came from Argentina (1.24 million), the United States (271.1 thousand) and Paraguay (215.5 thousand). Together, tourists from the three countries make up almost half of the foreigners who visit Brazil. Among the top five, Chile (197.8 thousand) and Uruguay (184.9 thousand) also appear. The most popular destinations in Brazil were: Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo . For the Minister of Tourism, Daniela Carneiro, the numbers reflect the political changes taking place in the country. “We have registered records in the entrance of international visitors, [o que é] the result of several government actions, such as Brazil’s rapprochement with the world and the country’s new image in terms of sustainability and environmental preservation. This has consolidated us as a promising destination, offering a unique and unforgettable experience to visitors from all over the world”, he said. Regarding the movement of the economy with tourism, the numbers also show growth. In the first five months, foreign tourists spent US$ 2.721 billion (about R$ 13 billion) in the country. The volume is 35.9% greater than that obtained in the same period last year. In May alone, there were US$ 567 million, considered the highest volume for the month in the historical series. Last year, the amount spent by tourists in May was US$ 373 million.
