The Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (TMRJ) will keep its doors open on the 14th, when it celebrates its 114th anniversary, offering the public, free of charge, various activities, in addition to the premiere of the opera Carmen, by Bizet. One of the most imposing buildings in the center of Rio de Janeiro, Theatro Municipal was inaugurated in 1909 and receives the greatest national and international artists, in various dance, music and opera shows. Result of the dream of many, such as the actor João Caetano (1808-1863) and the playwright Arthur Azevedo (1855-1908), the work was only realized during the administration of Mayor Pereira Passos, with the urban reform initiated in 1902 that “modernized” the center of Rio de Janeiro, of French inspiration, as well as the project of the Theater itself, which is the Paris Opera. With an initial capacity for 1,739 spectators, the Theater received, in the first years, European opera and dance companies. Its own artistic body was only established in the 1930s, with a Symphony Orchestra, Choir and Ballet. After four renovations, the space currently has 2,252 seats, divided into an audience, three floors of balcony, boxes and boxes, making it one of the main venues in the country and Latin America. Programming In an interview with Agência Brasil, the president of Fundação Teatro Municipal, Clara Paulino, highlighted that, “once again, we open the house to our public, with a diverse program that starts at 9 am, with the presentation of the Banda dos Fuzileiros Navais, on the external steps of the theater, in Cinelândia, and runs until 5 pm, with hourly programming”. There will be a short break, preceding, at 7 pm, the preview of the opera Carmen, by Bizet, also free, closing the day of celebrations. Clara Paulino emphasized that the entire program for the theater’s anniversary, on the 14th, will be free. Passwords will begin to be distributed one hour before the events. For the opera, ticket collection will be online, through the Theatro Municipal website, from Monday (10), limited to two tickets per person. For the remaining days, with six dates between the 16th and 30th of July, tickets for Carmen, by Bizet, can be purchased online or at the theater box office, with prices ranging from R$20 (gallery) to R$ $80 for audience and boxes. The president of Fundação Teatro Municipal reinforced that the TMRJ is a national heritage “and a heritage of each one of us. Therefore, we hope to welcome all our audience to celebrate another year dedicated to art, culture, with the hope that many others will come in this way”. After the exhibition of the Banda dos Fuzileiros Navais, at 9 am, there will be a presentation in the ‘foyer’ (lobby) of the theater, starting at 10 am, by the Camerata Jovem do Rio de Janeiro. On the Boulevard of Avenida 13 de Maio, at 11:00 am, it will be the turn of the Orquestra Sinfônica Jovem do Estado. Between 12:00 and 14:00, there will be demonstrations by the Municipal Theater Ballet, in the Assyrio Room, with the participation of students from the Maria Olenewa State School of Dance. At 2 pm, the Quinteto Ciro Pereira will perform in the lobby, in the place where the piano that belonged to the composer Chiquinha Gonzaga is located. At 3 pm, the Young Fluminense Symphony Orchestra will perform on Boulevard de Portas Abertas. Great voices from Theatro Municipal will perform a singing and piano recital at 4 pm. At 17:00, the external staircase of the Municipal Building will serve as a stage for the Municipal Guard Band. Within the program, there will also be two groups of guided tours, at 11 am and 2 pm. Carmen Closing the party on a high note, the public will be able to watch the premiere of Carmen, by Bizet, at 7 pm, in the Great Room, with soloists, choir, ballet and Symphony Orchestra of Theatro Municipal (OSTM). The scenic direction is by Julianna Santos and the musical direction and conducting will be in charge of Maestro Felipe Prazeres. The premiere of the opera is scheduled for Sunday (16), at 5 pm. On the 19th, there will be an exclusive presentation for schools, at 2 pm. Before each recital, there will be a free lecture. The season will continue until July 30, on alternate days, totaling seven performances. Carmen premiered at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1875 and caused a great scandal at the time. The reason was the choice of theme and, mainly, the “transgressive character of the protagonist”. The definitive consecration took place that same year, when the opera was presented in Vienna. In a short time, Bizet’s work conquered the world. At Theatro Municipal do Rio, the opera premiered in 1913 and, since then, it has had almost 100 performances on the equipment. Based on the homonymous work by the writer Proper Mérimée, the opera tells the story of the seductive gypsy Carmen, who takes Don José away from his fiancée Micaela, resulting in a tragic love plot.
