in English

A muscle contracture in the back prevented Bia Haddad Maia from continuing her great campaign at the Wimbledon Tournament. This Monday (10) in London (England), the 27-year-old Brazilian abandoned the match against Kazakh Elena Rybakina, valid for the round of 16, still in the first set, when she was losing by 4 games to 1, after just 27 minutes of dispute. With that, she also withdrew from the doubles bracket, in which she played alongside Belarusian Victoria Azarenka. BEATRICE, BIA! Beatriz Haddad Maia, with a lot of back pain, had to leave the match against Elena Rybakina 🇰🇿, at Wimbledon 🇬🇧 May you recover and be back as soon as possible, Bia! 🙏 pic.twitter.com/poMse2UVlO — Time Brasil (@timebrasil) July 10, 2023 “Today I ended up losing here at Wimbledon, I couldn’t finish the game. During the point, I ended up feeling a very strong muscle contracture, kind of pinching and radiating to the leg. Maybe something nerve-wracking, we don’t know yet. I have a very special team, which takes care of me very well, and I’m sure that now we’ll treat it in the best way”, declared the Brazilian. Now Bia will return to Brazil to take care of the injury and rest. The Brazilian’s next challenge will be the WTA 1000 in Montréal (Canada): “My next challenge is only in Montreal, in a month, so I’ll be able to rest. It was a sad day, but it’s part of it. We have to learn from these moments, as we always learn from victories”. Last Saturday, by overcoming the Romanian Sorana Cirstea by double 6/2, Bia Haddad ended a fast that lasted 21 years, of a representative of the country reaching the eighth on the London grass. However, the injury in this Monday’s match prevented her from achieving another feat, reaching the quarterfinals of the women’s bracket. The last one to do so was Maria Esther Bueno (five-time Wimbledon champion) in 1976. Brazil in doubles Despite having no more representatives in the singles bracket, Brazil is still alive in doubles. Among the women, Luisa Stefani and the French Caroline Garcia defeated the Hungarian Timea Babos and the Belgian Kirsten Flipkens this Monday by 2 sets to 0 – partial 7/6 (10/8) and 6/3 – to advance to the quarterfinals of Final.
