Brazil wins first gold at the Paralympic Athletics World Championship

This Monday (10th), the Brazilian delegation won its first gold medal in the current edition of the Paralympic Athletics World Championship, which is being held in Paris (France). The victory came with Ricardo Mendonça in the 100 meters race of the T37 class (cerebral palsy), with a time of 11s21. Everything I’ve experienced has brought me here now. It’s wonderful to be here. Last year, I injured my knee, I thought about giving up. But I did. I thank everyone who was part of this story”, said Ricardo, who was followed in the race by Saptoyogo Purnomo, from Indonesia, and also by Brazilian Christian Gabriel, who was third. In the 5,000 meters for the T11 class (blind athletes), Júlio César Agripino from São Paulo secured silver, with a time of 15min07s21, while Paralympic champion Yeltsin Jacques took bronze after completing the distance in 15min12s37. The gold went to the Japanese Kenya Karasawa, who overtook the two Brazilians in a final sprint to complete the race with a time of 15min05s19. “I was away from the tracks for a year or so because of an injury. I felt bad, I couldn’t train properly before the Worlds, but today we’re back at a high level. Brazil has shown that it has very competitive athletes. Thanks to my family and guides. I intend to come back better in Paris [Jogos Paralímpicos] next year,” declared Yeltsin. Three podiums on the first day The Athletics World Championship started to be played last Sunday (9), an opportunity in which Brazil already secured three medals: a silver with Lorena Spoladore, in the long jump of the T11 class (for the blind), and two bronzes, with Vinicius Quintino, in petra (T72), and with Wallace dos Santos, in the F55 shot put (for wheelchair users).
