The Labor Court condemned businessman Saul Klein, son of the founder of Casas Bahia, Samuel Klein, now deceased, to the payment of R$ 30 million, for sexually exploiting adolescents and women and subjecting them to work similar to slavery. The decision was released this Friday (14th) by the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT), which announced the conviction as the highest for human trafficking in the entire country and the second highest for collective moral damages for the practice of work similar to that of slave. The compensation will be distributed among three non-profit institutions. The court also imposed a fine of BRL 100,000 for each time there is non-compliance, with the amount subject to increase. The Regional Council of Medicine of São Paulo and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of São Paulo are obliged to take steps to find out whether the doctors who provided care to the victims at Klein’s farm, where they remained, committed any ethical or legal infraction. As highlighted by the agency, Klein lured victims with false promises of work. In the case of young women aged between 16 and 21, Klein promised to help them build modeling careers, a fact that the MPT proved after investigations. “After enticement, women and teenagers were inserted into a criminal exploitation scheme on the businessman’s site, being forced to have sexual intercourse with the defendant for days, under strong psychological violence and armed surveillance”, describes MPT, in a note, which coincides with the information obtained by the police. In addition to the restriction of freedom, the victims suffered contamination by sexually transmitted infections. Strategies were even revealed in reports by Agência Pública, in April 2021, and on TV Globo’s Fantástico program. As the MPT pointed out, what served as the basis for opening the case against Klein were the denouncements made by the press and the mobilization of the non-governmental organization Justiceiras. Saul Klein even ran for election in 2020, for the PSD. He ran for vice-mayor of São Caetano do Sul and declared assets of more than R$ 61 million. Agência Brasil sought out the office that represents Saul Klein and made contact available, should you wish to comment on the decision. Until the closing of this matter, the defense of the businessman did not appear.
