President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a bilateral meeting, this Tuesday (18), in Brussels, with the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, on the sidelines of the plenary session of the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the European Union (EU). At the meeting, Scholz invited Lula to a second meeting of high-level intergovernmental consultations, this time in Berlin, the German capital. In January, the German Chancellor was in Brasília on an official visit, when he met with Lula at the Planalto Palace. The next meeting between the two is scheduled for December 4, during Lula’s return trip to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, where he will participate in the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change at the United Nations (COP28), which takes place from November 30. Bilateral meetings Lula met with other European leaders on the sidelines of the summit. One of the meetings was with the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Karl Nehammer, who was invited by Lula to visit Brazil. Lula also met with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen. During the conversation, they addressed questions about the environment and the fight against inequality, and exchanged invitations to visit Brazil and Denmark. Frederiksen announced his intention to approve a contribution to the Amazon Fund in the Danish budget. The Brazilian president also met with the Swedish prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, when they discussed bilateral relations, including the partnership in the manufacture of Gripen fighters, used by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). Brazil and Sweden have an aircraft production contract involving the Brazilian Embraer and the Swedish SAAB. The Swedish prime minister invited the Brazilian president to visit Sweden. Lula also invited Kristersson to visit Brazil, accompanied by a trade mission next year. In May, Lula participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Gripen aircraft production line, at the Embraer factory, in the city of Gavião Peixoto, in the interior of São Paulo. Saab’s contract with the FAB provides for the delivery of 36 Gripen aircraft by 2027, in addition to the transfer of technology to Brazil. Of the total, 13 fighters will be manufactured in Sweden, eight will have production started in the European country and completed in Brazil, and 15 will be entirely manufactured at the Embraer unit, by Brazilian engineers and technicians, who underwent training at Saab’s headquarters in Linköping. Currently, four of the planes are already operational at Anápolis Air Force Base (GO) and another two arrived in recent months. The aircraft manufacturing program is part of actions aimed at renewing the infrastructure of the Brazilian Armed Forces, a process that also includes the project for the Brazilian nuclear submarine, in Rio de Janeiro, and the project for the Guarani armored vehicle.
