President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said, this Wednesday (19th), in Brussels, that the world is already tired of the impasses and contemporary conflicts, but he stressed that this tiredness can help in the search for solutions. The statement was made amidst comments about the war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the internal and external problems faced by Venezuela. According to the president, this “tiredness”, associated with the negative events that naturally result from the two conflict situations and impasses, could create a “climate” for solutions faster than one imagines. In this sense, the president stated that the participation of countries not directly involved in the negotiation processes is important. In a press conference, shortly before leaving for Brazil, Lula said that the meetings held during the Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and the European Union (EU) enabled European countries to better understand the moderate position of Latin Americans regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine. The president said he understands the difficulty for those directly or indirectly involved in the conflict to understand that distancing themselves from other less involved countries could help in future negotiations. “Obviously I can’t help but understand the nervousness of the EU. After all, there are countries that border Ukraine,” said Lula, quoting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “There are many people who were nervous and flustered months ago, who now need someone to help them find the path to peace. Brazil has done it [busca pela paz] from the start. We’ve been talking about this with China, Indonesia, Latin America. We need to build a group of countries capable of, at the right time, convincing Russia and Ukraine that peace is the best way forward,” he added. Lula reiterated Brazil’s position in favor of ending the war as soon as possible, and that afterwards the parties sit down at the table to discuss. According to him, there is no way to open dialogue until there is a ceasefire. “As long as there is a shot, there will be no talk”, he lamented. Fatigue The Brazilian president said that his special envoy to the two countries, the adviser to the Presidency for International Affairs, Celso Amorim, reported on how scared people in those regions were. “It is normal that their concern is greater than mine, that I am 14,000 kilometers away. But it is exactly because we are far away that we can have peace of mind to try to create a climate of building peace, ”he argued. “For the time being, neither Zelensky nor [Vladimir] Putin [presidente da Rússia] they want to talk about peace because each one thinks he will win”, he added. “But there is already a fatigue. The world begins to tire. Countries start to get tired. Then the moment will come when you will have peace. Then there will have to be a group of countries capable of talking to Russia and Ukraine”, he added. Venezuela Lula also took advantage of the topic to speak of the “tiredness” that Venezuela and its people are going through, amid questions about internal politics and external sanctions applied against that country by the United States. The document was published this Tuesday (18), one day after the meeting, in Brussels, between the presidents of the four countries, with the participation of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. All gathered at the same table with the Vice President of Venezuela and the chief negotiator of the Unitary Platform of the Venezuelan opposition, Gerardo Blyde. “The conclusion we have reached is that the situation in Venezuela will be resolved when the Venezuelan parties and government reach the conclusion of the date of the elections and the rules that will establish the elections. Based on this, the commitment that the punishments imposed by the United States must begin to fall. These are absurd sanctions that do not allow Venezuela to even deal with the money it is [depositado] in other countries”, said the Brazilian president. “I feel that everyone is tired. Venezuela is tired. People want to find a solution. I think we’re getting to that point. If they come to an understanding regarding the rules and dates of the elections, we will have the moral authority to ask for an end to sanctions,” added Lula.
