FIFA president Gianni Infantino said women’s football has seen incredible growth over the past 10 years and is confident the World Cup will win over anyone who remains skeptical of the merits of women’s football. The sport’s governing body expects 2 billion people to watch the 64-game tournament being hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The event starts in Auckland on Thursday (20). “A lot of people who believe that women’s football is still not a great game, or it’s not as fun or it’s a bad copy of men’s football or something like that – well, when they watch a game for the first time, they really will see that it’s a fantastic game,” said Infantino. “The level has grown incredibly over the last 10 years and the best are coming here.” It’s time for the Women’s World Cup to start! How about we remember Queen Marta’s 17 goals in the competition? 😍👑 #FIFAWWC — FIFA World Cup 🏆 (@fifaworldcup_pt) July 19, 2023 Infantino said that if there was a sport where women could compete with men, it would be football. “I mean, it’s 50% of the population, women around the world, more or less, right?” he stated. “It’s really inconceivable, intellectually, that there isn’t a sport that can compete with some of the men’s sports.” The ninth edition of the Women’s World Cup runs from July 20 to August 20. * Reproduction of this content is prohibited.
