The public health network in Rio de Janeiro will have a Municipal Program for the Discovery of Early Signs of Autism. This is what determines the law, sanctioned this Friday (21) by Mayor Eduardo Paes. According to the standard, the M-chat scale test should be applied to children between 1 year 4 months and 2 and a half years old, as recommended by the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics. The implementation of the law will help in the effectiveness of the treatment and in the collection of data for future statistics on the panorama of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the city. According to councilor Paulo Pinheiro (PSOL), who is a doctor and one of the authors of the law, “once created, children will be able to have a more individualized follow-up, in order to allow a greater speed in the search for specialized professionals, as well as the follow-up of the Tutelary Council to the necessary demands in case of confirmation of diagnosis”, he explained. The standard also provides that, at the time of the test, those responsible should be informed about the importance of a possible early identification of ASD, as well as the score that characterizes the low, medium or high degree of probability of identifying autism, with low risk being zero to 2; moderate risk, 3 to 7 and high risk, 8 to 20, according to the M-Chat scale classification. The law, sanctioned in part, creates the Municipal Program for the Promotion and Dissemination of Play. Authored by councilor Thais Ferreira (Psol), the program aims to coordinate and develop activities oriented towards playing, valuing its social function for the full development of childhood, as well as its promotion as a cultural instrument for inclusion, work and production of dignity for children and those who play. Mayor Eduardo Paes’ vetoes will return to the municipal legislature to be analyzed by councilors in plenary session.
