The Regional Council of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) released a survey this Monday (24) pointing out that, every three days, a doctor suffers some type of aggression during professional activity in the state. The data are from the Medical Defense Portal, launched by Cremerj in November 2018, with the aim of acting quickly in more serious cases, such as aggression and illegal practice of medicine. With regard to cases of violence during professional activity, the Medical Defense Portal counted, between December 2018 and June of this year, 546 occurrences of doctors who suffered some type of aggression, whether physical or verbal. The situation in public units is the most complicated. Of the total number of cases recorded, 67% occurred in this network. The document points out that 75 doctors were physically attacked in the work environment, from December 2018 to June 2023. The most recent case happened to the doctor Sandra Bouyer, who was punched and kicked during her shift at the Francisco da Silva Telles Municipal Hospital, in Irajá, in the northern part of the capital, on the 16th of this month. While Sandra was being attacked, an 82-year-old patient suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and could not be rescued by the doctor. The patient died. Sandra, on the other hand, had to take stitches in her mouth and had abrasions all over her body. Female doctors, the main victims Most of the aggressions registered by Cremerj occurred against women – around 61% of the cases. This year alone, from January to June, 62.5% of the episodes involved female doctors. “The numbers are worrying. It is inadmissible for a doctor to be attacked during his professional practice. What we saw this week, when a doctor was cowardly attacked, was unfortunately not punctual. Therefore, we are looking for ways to increase the safety of doctors in their work environment”, says the president of Cremerj, Guilherme Nadais. Cremerj has been working to ensure safety for doctors in the workplace. With the Medical Defense Portal, the council offers professionals who register the violence suffered on its platform guidance on how to proceed in these situations. In June, Cremerj approved a resolution that determines that all health units in the state of Rio de Janeiro provide security to guarantee the physical integrity of doctors and other professionals who work in these establishments. The regulation also makes it compulsory to notify the council about the occurrence of violence against doctors within these establishments and also indicates that administrative and psychological support be offered to the victim.
