The National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples (Funai) holds a meeting this Monday afternoon (24) with leaders of the Kaingang people, in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, in search of a solution to the conflict that resulted in the death of an indigenous person and left 11 others injured. The confrontation, which took place on the last day of the 16th, would have been motivated by the expulsion of members of the Kondá Indigenous Reserve by chief Efésio Siqueira, after being contested by the group. According to Chapecó City Hall, after the conflict, part of the indigenous population was welcomed at the Ivo Silveira Gym, where they were welcomed by a Civil Defense team, from the Municipal Health and Social Assistance departments, and received donations of mattresses and food. Currently, 350 indigenous people occupy the site, but the Municipality of Chapecó has asked Funai to relocate this population to a more suitable location. During the morning, the Federal Police launched an operation to execute 14 search and seizure warrants in the process of investigating the conflict. Of these, seven warrants were carried out in the indigenous reserve and another seven in the gymnasium, where the indigenous people who were expelled from the community are housed. “Cell phones were collected in both places, without any kind of resistance”, informed Adroaldo Antonio Fidelis, Funai’s regional coordinator. According to the Federal Police, the force in the region has been reinforced since the Sunday in which the conflict took place and the agents will act in the region with preventive measures and support to the Military Police of Santa Catarina until there is a solution and when there is no more risk of new violent events. Funai informed, through a note, that it works together with the city hall in the search for possible measures for the temporary accommodation of the indigenous people who are in the gymnasium. The proposal that will be discussed is to accommodate the group in neighboring territories, to guarantee the safety and well-being of those involved in the conflict.
