Former firefighter Maxwell Simões Corrêa, known as Suel, was arrested this Monday (24th) in Rio de Janeiro, as part of Operation Élpis, launched by the Federal Police (PF) and the Marielle and Anderson Task Force (FT-MA), together with the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime of the Rio Public Ministry (Gaeco/MPRJ). According to the PF, the action is the first phase of the investigation that investigates the murders of councilwoman Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, in addition to the attempted murder of publicist Fernanda Chaves. The crime took place on March 14, 2018, around 9:30 pm, on Rua Joaquim Palhares, in the Estácio neighborhood, in the central region of Rio. Marielle and Anderson were shot dead inside a car. The advisor was also in the vehicle, but survived her injuries. According to the Federal Police, a preventive arrest warrant and seven search and seizure warrants were served in Rio and in the metropolitan region. The MP informed that the fulfillment of the warrants had the support of the Coordination of Security and Intelligence (CSI/MPRJ). On June 10, 2020, Maxwell Simões Correa was arrested and accused of obstructing investigations into the execution of Marielle and Anderson. The arrest was in Operation Submersus 2, launched that day by the MPRJ, the Internal Affairs of the Fire Department and the Homicide Police Station of the Capital (DH). At the time, the MPRJ prosecutor, Simone Sibilio, who was responsible for the investigation of the case at the agency, said, in an interview at the door of the DH, in Barra da Tijuca, that Correa was the owner of the car used to hide an arsenal of weapons belonging to Ronnie Lessa, accused of being the councilwoman’s executor. “He [Maxwell Correa] liable for the crime of obstruction of justice. That’s why he was investigated, denounced and arrested. He participated in the concealment of several weapons, which were thrown overboard. If the weapon used in the crime was there, we cannot say for sure. But the fact is that he participated in the crime of obstruction of justice. There are several pieces of evidence in the process that are under secrecy”, said Simone at that time. Repercussion The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, Marielle’s sister, posted a message on her Twitter profile in which she reaffirms her confidence in the investigations. “I just spoke by phone with Minister Flávio Dino and with the director general of the Federal Police about the news of the Marielle and Anderson case. I reaffirm my confidence in the conduct of the investigation by the PF and I repeat the question I have been asking for five years: who had Marielle killed and why?”, she questioned once again. Also on Twitter, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, published a message about the PF and MPRJ operation. “Today, the Federal Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office advanced in the investigation into the homicides of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, in addition to the attempted murder of publicist Fernanda Chaves. One preventive arrest warrant and seven search and seizure warrants were served,” he said. On the same social network, the president of Embratur Brasil, Marcelo Freixo, considered another important step towards solving the murders. “Who ordered the killing of Marielle? Another important step by @policiafederal to identify the perpetrators of the crime. Marielle and I have worked together since 2006 and we’ve always faced the murderous mafia that runs RJ. Therefore, pointing out the perpetrators of this political crime is crucial for us to rebuild our State ”, he concluded.
